Men’s Day Sermon Topics and Themes

Recent research shows that across Canada, the US, and the UK, roughly 75% of deaths by suicide are men.  In Canada, roughly 8 men take their lives every day. In the UK, nearly 12 men lose their lives to suicide every day. The numbers are expected to go up.

These statistics are heartbreaking. Questions linger in our minds. What is happening to the men we call grandfathers, fathers, brothers, nephews, or cousins? Who or what is causing so much pain that they opt to take such measures? What is the church doing about?

The church and the overall body of Christ should do something. This coming Men’s Day, pastors and all religious leaders can bring together men from various backgrounds and offer a series of Men’s Day sermons with themes that will bring awareness to men about their value before God’s eye.

After days of research and analysis, we have developed this guide that gives you a clear answer to what Men’s Day actually is, when churches celebrate it, and twenty sermon themes or topics organized by what men in a normal church congregation are actually wrestling with. We have also included the scriptures, which will give a better biblical view of men in society and what God expects of them. Finally, we have developed a sample of five full sermon outlines you can adapt and preach on the coming Men’s Day.

Is There a Difference Between Men’s Day, International Men’s Day, and Father’s Day?

It is important to understand that Men’s Day is not Father’s Day, and it’s not International Men’s Day. This is one of the major confusions that a lot of pastors searching for sermon material are often not aware of.

International Men’s Day is a secular awareness day held every November 19. It focuses on general issues that affect men, like men’s health, homelessness, and suicide prevention. It has no connection to the church calendar.

Father’s Day, observed on the third Sunday in June in most parts of the world, honors fathers specifically. It is a day associated with roles of being fathers and not as men in general.

Men’s Day, as most Christians know it, is a church tradition with deep roots in church life. It’s a dedicated Sunday, Sabbath, or weekend set aside to honor, challenge, and recommit the men in the church to their godly calling, whether fathers or not.  It typically includes men serving in every visible ministry role for the day. Other activities, such as testimonies from men in the congregation, are also included. Sermons are preached specifically to and about men.

Compared to Father’s Day, Men’s Day isn’t really about parenting. It’s about identity, responsibility, spiritual leadership, and the unique pressures men carry.

Below, we have looked at sermon topics classified based on issues that affect today’s men.

Men’s Day Sermon Outlines

Sermon Outline 1: Sermon Topic “Walk with men who will sharpen you”

Scripture: Proverbs 27:17

“As iron sharpens iron,  so one person sharpens another”

Introduction

Start with a short story about a tool that’s been neglected. It could be an axe, a dull knife or a slasher. You can also opt to give the story of the two men who decided to cut a tree. One sharpened his axe first, and the other started cutting without sharpening.  You can also include another story of your choice.

Lesson 1 — What Isolation does to a man.

You can give a second story of how an isolated antelope or gazelle in the savannah becomes easy prey for attacks.

Use 1 Peter 5:8 to show how the devil is like a roaring lion waiting to devour God’s people

Compare women vs men behaviour when it comes to isolation and how this affects their social life and even longevity

Give reasons why men choose to remain silent

Explain the cost of choosing always to remain silent.

Lesson 2Sharpening may bring Friction is not an enemy

Illustrate how sharpening requires contact, not comfort. The sharpening may be letting loose some of the boundaries, more time, dedication and Honest brotherhood.

Lesson 3 – You were never meant to do this alone.

Point to the early church’s model of mutual accountability (Acts 2:42-47).

Practical Illustration:  Give a testimony or have a man from the congregation give a testimony of how an accountability relationship changed him,  ideally delivered live before the sermon.

Lesson 4 – Watch out if the friction is sharpening or not

Not all friction makes a knife sharp. Applied friction in the wrong direction can cause unnecessary wear and tear. Access the progress you make with the connections you have.

Lesson 5: Keep off bad company

1 Corinthians 15:33

Be careful with the type of people around you. Bad company ruin good morals.

Lesson 6: Bible Characters who sharpened one another

Story of how Barnabas looked for Paul and took him to the apostles- Acts 9:27. A good friend will look out for you and even mention your name where there is an opportunity.

Elijah and Elisha- Elisha refused to leave Elijah’s side until he was taken and got a double portion of his blessings- 2 Kings 2:2

Application/Call to action

Invite men to commit to one accountability relationship before they leave the building. Give out cards to write a name on.

Sermon Outline 2: “Healing for the Fatherless Man”

Scripture: Psalm 27:10

“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.

Introduction

As you start, show the latest statistics on children who are growing up without fathers. The effect it has on children and the problems it’s causing society today.  Carefully acknowledge men in the congregation who grew up without a father, and how some are trying their best to raise children without having one who modelled for them.

Lesson 1 — Absence is real, but it’s not the final word.

Read slowly Psalm 27:10. Explain that it was written by David when he was fleeing from Saul. What it must feel like to be rejected. Explain with sincerity what it means to be rejected by a mother or father. Give a story that may be relatable regarding rejection.

Lesson 2 — God positions Himself as Father to the abandoned.

Read Psalm 68:5 and point out ways in which God is the father to the fatherless. Illustrate how God has revealed Himself through the lives of orphans. How He favoured their lives.

Lesson 3 — You can not give what you didn’t receive, but you can try

In this men’s day sermon for fatherless men, explain that healing doesn’t require having had a perfect father model, but only a present God. Fathers who have been absent have what it takes to bring up a child in a godly way.

Lesson 5: Bible Characters who grew up without a father

Look at Timothy’s life. His father was a Greek, a non-believer who was not seen to be active in Timothy’s life.  His life is shaped by his mother, Eunice and grandmother Lois

The story of Jephthah, a son of a prostitute. Rejected and chased away by his brothers. He grew up an outcast and developed warrior skills. Afterwards, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. They eventually make him their leader.

Real-Life Illustration

A brief, real story of a man who overcame the challenges of having an absentee father. For instance, Christian Ronaldo, the famous Portuguese footballer who grew up with a father who was an alcoholic.

A Call to Action

A moment of prayer specifically for men parenting without a model. This can be followed by an invitation to a men’s mentorship or small group.

Sermon Outline 3: Men Raising a Great Future Generation in Secret

Scripture:

Ruth 4:13-17

Matthew 1:5

Introduction

Give an illustration of the little-known information about the well famous people in society. Portray the role  fathers have played silently and the sacrifices they made to bring up children who have turned the wheels of big companies, nations and generations.

Read Ruth 4:13-17 and give a brief history of the book of Ruth. In this sermon for single fathers ensure you bring out how Boaz stepped into a broken home hit by death, grief, and poverty. He carefully follows all what is required and eventually marries ruth.

Boaz became Obed’s father, who also became father of Jesse who was King David’s father. A simple act of faith, and doing what is right made Boaz in the lineage of Christ

Lesson 1: Fathers Stepping Into the Gap

Pint out how Boaz found a woman whose life was messed up and how he was graceful enough not to create another mess in Ruth’s life.

He willingly stepped into the gap to provide protection, security, and a name for a child who needed a future (Ruth 4:13).

Lesson 2: The Power of Godly Character

Boaz was a man of character. Explain what he did before he got married to Ruth and how he handled her.

Lesson 3: Laying Foundations for Unseen Royalty

Boaz died long before Israel ever had a king. He never saw his grandson Jesse, and he never saw his great-grandson, King David. Yet, without Boaz’s quiet obedience, the royal line would not exist (Matthew 1:5).

Application/A Call to Action

Single fatherhood often means stepping into spaces left empty by loss, divorce, or hardship. It requires a willingness to provide stability when life feels fractured.

The hardest part of single parenting is the invisible daily routine. In the sacrifices that won’t be applauded by anyone.

As father every time you feel tired and exhausted remember God has destined to you to raise kids who will go places you will never go. You are an Unseen Kingmaker. Your daily faithfulness is forging a legacy that will outlive you.

Ask the fathers to write in their journals the positive things they see in their children. This will act as an encouragement every time they feel discouraged.

Men’s Day Program & Service Ideas

It is important to have an impactful sermon, but there are also other surrounding programs that can make Men’s Day memorable.

Below are several few additions you can include in men’s day program worth considering:

  • a men’s choir
  • a men’s praise team leading worship for the service,
  • two or three brief testimonies from men in different life stages (a young father, a man further along, a man in recovery or re-entry),
  • a mentorship pairing announcement where established men in the congregation are publicly connected with younger men,
  • a community service component tied to the day (a Saturday workday, a visit to a re-entry program, a fundraiser for men’s ministry),
  • a special offering designated for men’s ministry programs
