What to Say in a Christian Thank You Note

During the years I coordinated our church’s women’s fellowship, I learned the impact of a normal thank you note and a Christian thank you note. The special case that opened my eyes to this difference was when one family from our church congregation decided to support a widow who was facing numerous challenges. They offered to buy her a 3-month supply of food for her and her family. One day the widow gave me a note and told me to read it. What the widow wrote in the thank-you note touched my heart.  She wrote, “Thank you for all the food you provided. For every meal we prepared, we felt Jesus’ embrace. That message has stuck in my heart till today.

The unique thing about Christian thank you messages is that they point all the glory to God. In this article, we have looked at how to say thank you in a spiritual way.

Example of Bible Stories That Teach Us How to Be Thankful

From Paul’s letter to Thessalonians, we know it’s God’s will for us to always give thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reads, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” God requires us to always have a grateful heart no matter what we are going through. Below are several stories of gratitude in the bible where we can learn from.

  1. Ruth and Boaz: Gratitude from a stranger

Ruth 2:10-12

10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me-a foreigner?”

11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband-how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.

12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”-NIV

Ruth was a foreigner, a widow, gleaning leftover grain in a field just to survive. When Boaz showed her unexpected kindness, she was stunned that a man of his standing would notice her at all. Boaz’s response wasn’t a simple “you’re welcome.” He blessed her instead, asking that the Lord Himself repay her for the loyalty she’d shown her mother-in-law, and that she’d be rewarded under the wings of the God she’d come to trust.

Gratitude lesson: As a Christian, it is good to thank someone by pointing to God as the true rewarder.

  1. David and the men of Jabesh-Gilead: Gratitude For Honor

2 Samuel 2:5-6

5 He sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. 6 May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this

After King Saul died in battle, his body was treated with disrespect by the Philistines until the men of Jabesh-Gilead risked their lives at night to recover it and bury him with dignity. When David heard what they’d done, he didn’t just approve of it. He sent them a personal blessing, thanking them by name and asking the Lord to repay their loyalty and kindness

Gratitude Lesson: We can also give gratitude for something done for someone else. Additionally, give gratitude to people who deserve it.

  1. The one leper who returned with gratitude

The third story of gratitude in the bible that is familiar to many is the one leper who returned to day thank you. Jesus healed ten men with leprosy in a single moment. All ten were healed. Only one turned around, came back, and thanked Him out loud, falling at His feet in worship. Jesus’ response to this story shows the scarcity of gratitude even when good deeds are done.

Gratitude lesson: Never overlook the chances you have to be thankful. For everything kindness extended to you, big or small, always be thankful.

  1. Paul’s letters: A man who was always grateful

Philippians 1:3-4

I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy

Nearly every letter Paul wrote opens the same way. He often thanked God for the specific people he was writing to and he mentioned them by name, for specific things they did or have. For example, their faith, their partnership, their generosity. To the believers in Philippi, he wrote that he thanked God every time he remembered them, and prayed for them with joy because of their partnership in the gospel.

Frequently Asked Questions When writing Christian thank you notes

How do you say thank you in a Christian way?

A Christian thank-you message should go a step further and give full credit to God as the ultimate source of the blessing.  It should also thank the person who delivered the blessing, specifically pointing out the role they played in fulfilling God’s plans. For example, “Thank you for being generous; God’s provision will reach many through your giving.”

What is a good Bible verse for a thank-you card?

Choosing the best bible verse to include in a Christian thank-you card depends on the occasion, as indicated below.

  1. For general gratitude1 Thessalonians 5:18 “ Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
  2. For good work done– Philippians 1:3 “I thank my God every time I remember you.”
  3. For a gift or financial support– 2 Corinthians 9:15 “ Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”
  4. For thanking someone who stood with you in a hard season– Ruth 1:8 “May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness”
  5. For someone who made a sacrifice to help you– 2 Samuel 2:6 “May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this”

How do you thank a pastor, church members, or church elders for their support?

The best approach to use is to ensure you are specific about what they did. If it is a visit, a sermon, a prayer, a season of counsel, mention it. Generic compliments are easily forgotten. People often remember the gratitude shown to them for the specific thing they did.

Is it appropriate to thank God directly instead of writing to a person?

It is always good to thank God first, then express your gratitude to the specific person.

How soon should I write a thank you note to the church after their support

The shorter the time taken to show appreciation, the better.
