Short Devotionals For Nurses

There are days when I have interacted with nurses who have had a difficult shift. According to the experiences of these nurses. No day is similar. One day, there are several emergency cases, and other times they have to watch one of the patients pass away even after all attempts to save them. A Christian nurse requires a lot of patience in their work.  They have to keep in mind that every patient is someone’s whole world and must be handled with skill, care, and dignity.

Nursing is one of the most physically, emotionally, and spiritually stretching callings on earth. The burnout is real. They pour out constantly, and often, no one asks what is being poured back into their lives.

This is exactly why we have compiled these short devotions for nurses. These are a collection of short devotionals built for nurses. As a nurse, you can read through in a break room or in your car. If you know someone who is a nurse, you can share with them some of these short devotions.

Devotion Topic: Compassion Without Burning Out

Galatians 6:9- “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Mary works in one of the biggest referral hospitals in her country. She is a nurse with more than 10 years’ experience. However, even with this experience, she was facing the toughest days of her career. For three shifts in a row, she was assigned to Mr. Gabriel, a patient suffering from chronic pain and a difficult prognosis. He was bitter and frequently used harsh words to her.

Like a normal human, Sarah felt her compassion drain out. In fact, she disliked walking into his room. On her fourth night, feeling completely drained, Sarah paused at the door of Mr. Thomas’s room. She said a simple prayer, and Galatians 6:9 came into her mind. As a result, she vowed to handle the patient in the best way, no matter what he said. She went in and ignored his sharp greeting. In the next 10 minutes, she spent carefully bathing his feet and adjusting his pillows to ease his pressure points. He didn’t say thank you. He just closed his eyes. Two weeks later, Mr. Gabriel was discharged.

A month after that, a card arrived at the nurse’s station addressed to Sarah. It was from Mr. Gabriel’s daughter. The note read: “My father passed away peacefully at home last week. In his final days, he told me that his entire perspective on life shifted because of a nurse who washed his feet when he was at his meanest. He said he finally understood what God’s love looked like. Mrs Sarah, thank you for not giving up on him. Sarah was touched by the note. She had no idea that a routine, exhausting task done in a moment of deep weariness was actually a seed that would change a man’s eternity.

Encouragement to a Nurse on Duty

When Paul wrote Galatians 6:9, he knew that it is easy to get weary. This happens when the work is hard and is done, but not rewarded. It is the moment we get weary that we must hang on. Sarah’s patience and good deed were witnessed by a man whose words could not. As a nurse, the patient might not thank you, no one may notice, but God is keeping track. You do not have to rely on your own strength.  Every time you feel burned out, take a short break. Think of what you do, and remember that you are planting seeds of comfort, dignity, and healing. God rewards us in multiples, and with Him, your harvest is guaranteed.

Short Prayer for Nurse on Duty.

God, you work in many ways. Please remember all the nurses on duty who feel exhausted and emotionally drained. You began the good work in them, and you can accomplish greatness in them. Renew their strength, hold their hands, and give them peace in their spirit. Let their service be a good seed planted into Your kingdom. Amen.

Devotional for Nurses During Difficult Shifts

Devotion Topic: When the Shift Breaks You

Matthew 11:28- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Meackey loved her work as a nurse. For a number of years, she worked in the children’s cancer ward. Year after year, she saw young children undergo treatments that would often take away the joy of a little child. It would constantly break her heart to walk into the ward and see a dead child’s body being taken away. At times, this would happen while she would be on duty, meaning she would be the one to break the news to the parents.

One morning, something interesting happened. One child could not bear the pain in her body. She kept on crying. To lighten up her spirit, she picked up her phone and put on one of the most common children’s songs and started dancing for the child. One parent recorded the scene and shared it on social media. God works in many ways because the video went viral. It received millions of views. Eventually, it reached influential people in power. That year, Meackey was included in the list of the Silent National Heroes.

As a nurse, some shifts will tire you. Where one patient is angry, another is deteriorating faster than expected, and the paperwork never stops growing, even as the hours run out.

Jesus did not say come to me when you have everything figured out. He said come as you are weary and burdened. The invitation in Matthew 11:28 is not for the nurse who had a great shift. It is for the one who barely survived the last one.

It is in the most challenging shift that God does His deepest work.  The most important thing is not the nurse who never breaks, but the one who knows where to turn to when they do. Always go to Him.

Short Prayer for Nurses During Difficult Shifts.

Lord, remember all nurses going through a difficult shift. Renew their body and spirit. Every time they run out of energy, remind them you have appointed them to do greatness so that Your name is glorified. Make them vessels of honor. Glorify yourself in their weakness and carry them through to the end of the shift, Amen.
