What Not to Say to a Cancer Patient
As a trained chaplain, there are certain words I know should not be said to an ailing person. Before you visit or call, it helps to know which phrases to avoid, no matter how well they are intended.
- “Everything happens for a reason.”
Most people use this phrase with the basis of trying to comfort. However, to a cancer patient, this can feel like it there must be a reason why they are going through a difficult moment. Instead of saying these words, say: “We don’t understand why this is happening, but all I know is that I will be there when you need me.”
- You’re so strong, you’ll beat this.”
Telling a sick person that they are strong when they might not be puts them under unnecessary pressure. Having cancer is not easy, so the best thing you can say is this: “You don’t have to always be strong. God is always there to carry you through, and you have all the support you need from people who love you.”
- “I know exactly how you feel.”
These are other common words used on cancer patients. Please, unless you also have cancer or you are a survivor, don’t use these words. Instead, say: “I will walk this journey with you. I may not have a full understanding of how you feel, but I am willing to listen and learn.”

- “It could be worse.”
Now, this creates a comparison which rarely brings any comfort. The patients are not expected to feel better just because it could have been worse. It is better to say: “Nothing is impossible with God; yes, it is hard, but all will be well.”
- “Just have faith, and you’ll be healed.”
This makes it look like the patient didn’t have faith by the time they were diagnosed with the disease. Yes, faith is important, but sickness does not always portray spiritual failure. What to say instead: “I’m praying for your healing, and God will calm every storm that will come your way.”
