What to Say to a Pastor Who is Leaving

Recently, I attended a pastor’s farewell church service for a pastor who was transferred to another church. The church service was jam-packed with different emotions. Several speakers had the opportunity to speak.  Some were well prepared, and others just stumbled on messages that sounded shallow. This raised a question about how well one should be prepared before delivering a farewell message to an outgoing pastor.  In most churches, after several years, a pastor prepares to leave a congregation. Some pastors reach the age of retirement, some get a transfer, and others get a calling to another church or a transition into a new ministry.

A farewell message to an outgoing pastor is one of the most meaningful things a congregation, church member, or fellow minister can offer. But finding those messages is not always easy. The question in most people’s minds is: “What do you say to someone who has given so much?” This post seeks to provide the answers to that question. In this article, you will find farewell messages to an outgoing pastor and priest, organized by who is speaking and the specific situation. These messages are suitable whether your pastor is retiring, transferring, moving to another church, or transitioning to a new ministry role. You will also find a pastor’s farewell speech, tips for honoring your pastor in a send-off service, and answers to the most common questions people ask when a pastor leaves.

What Bible Characters Said When God’s Servants Were Leaving

Scripture is filled with farewell moments and what people said at those specific moments. These stories show that grief, gratitude, honor, and blessing are all emotions and reactions people have as their leader departs. Below are some of the biblical farewell moments.

1. Elisha to Elijah

“My Father! My Father! The Chariots and Horsemen of Israel!” (2 Kings 2:12)

This is the most emotionally raw farewell scene in the entire Old Testament. As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated Elijah and Elisha. Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father!

One thing stands out in Elisha’s farewell cry that speaks directly to pastor farewell messages today.

Application: He called Elijah “My father.” We all know that Elijah was not Elisha’s biological father, but his spiritual father. A pastor is a spiritual father. Calling them that in a farewell message is not sentimental; it is biblical.

2. The Ephesian Elders to Paul

They Wept, Embraced Him, and Kissed Him” (Acts 20:37–38)

This is one of the New Testament’s most powerful farewells. It is a scene between an Ephesian leader and Paul. In this case, the Ephesians’ response is physical and emotional, not verbal.

Application: The Ephesian elders teach us that a farewell does not always need elaborate words. Sometimes, the most honest thing a congregation can offer a departing pastor is tears and then walking him to the door.

3. Jesus to His Disciples

“I Have Called You Friends” (John 15:15)

Jesus’ farewell discourse in John 14–17 is the longest farewell speech in the New Testament, and within it is one of the most stunning things any departing leader has ever said to those he served.

Jesus said to His disciples, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends.”

The greatest servant-leader who ever lived, at the point of His departure, redefined a relationship. He did not tell his disciples, “I led you,” but “I befriended you.” This is the model every departing pastor inherits. The congregation does not merely lose a leader. They lose a friend.

Application: Your pastor came to lead us, but he leaves as a friend.

Farewell Message for a Pastor Retiring After Years of Service

Last year, as our pastor was retiring after 30 years of service, the church was filled with mixed reactions. One could clearly see how church members struggled to find the perfect words to express what they felt at that farewell service.  As a church leader who has attended several farewell parties for a retiring pastor, the most important things to mention and appreciate a Pastor who is retiring are how his ministry has impacted the church, the legacy he leaves, and assurance that his services will always be needed once in a while.

After recording some of the farewell messages by several people in the farewell church service, below is one of the most relevant:

Farewell Message from a church member to a Pastor who is retiring after 30 years of service

“God is good regardless of the season’s life brings to us. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a time for everything. Today, we are here to celebrate our pastor who has run the race well. 30 years of faithful service take the hand of God. No man can do it on his own strength. Pastor, we really appreciate all the good work you have done. Like the way Elijah passes the mantle to Elisha, God has also chosen you to pass on the mantle. You have favour in His eyes to retire in good health and with lots of wisdom.  You gave your best years to this congregation, and this congregation is forever changed because of you. Enjoy every moment of the rest God has prepared for you. We will truly miss having you around, but we release you to have more time with your family and friends. But once in a while, we call you to come and preach God’s word, for a man of God never fully retires. We love you. Bye, Pastor, forever cherished by this church.”( Message from an Elder)

Farewell Message to a Priest who is being transferred to another Parish

“On this farewell day, we celebrate you because you are a priest who loves to do the best in God’s vineyard. What you gave to this church over the 8 years you have been with us cannot be measured in sermons preached or in programs led. It can only be measured in changed lives. The youths have been mentored, and the older people have been directed in a godly manner. There are many of us who sit here today and are living proof of what God can do through a man who loves Him. As you start and take another journey in your life, we want to express our appreciation for the endless guidance, support, and inspiration you have added to our lives.  May your new path be filled with blessings.  We are saddened by your departure, but all in all, you deserve every blessing in it. Farewell and God bless you.”

Farewell Message to a Priest Who Is Retiring

“From the first day you joined our church, we have been blessed by your kindness, compassion, and love. Your encouragement, rebuke, and inspiration have transformed our lives in one way or another. Your departure truly brings some mixed reactions, but we are glad you have a chance to enjoy your retirement surrounded by your friends and family. In Psalms 37:25, King David said, I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. As you leave, keep in mind that God has prepared the best for you. We will miss you, but never forget that you are always welcome to share with us the good news. May the hand of God lead you, and even in retirement, may He open the best opportunities for you to glorify His name. Goodbye, our dear priest.”

Conclusion: What to Say to a Pastor Who is Leaving

As you write a farewell message to our outgoing pastor or priest, keep in mind to have an official message. The message may be personalized, but the important thing is to use respectable words and tone. Remember, the Pastor or priest represents the church, which is the Holy place of worship.
