Characteristics of Esther in The Bible

1. Stunning Beauty: Esther 2:7

Esther 2:7 “Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his daughter when her father and mother died.” {NIV}

The above verse records that Esther was beautiful and had a lovely figure. This is one of the things that made her be selected as one of the virgins who would get the opportunity to be chosen as the future queen of Persia.

2. Secretive: Esther 2: 20

Esther 2: 20 “But Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality just as Mordecai had told her to do, for she continued to follow Mordecai’s instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.”

With a Jewish background, Mordecai felt there was no need to reveal this as they were in a foreign land. Jews had some enemies as it would later be revealed. Easter was secretive and didn’t reveal her background until it became necessary to do so in the last chapter of the book of Esther.

3. Obedient and Humble: Esther 2: 15, Esther 2: 20

Esther 2:15 “When the turn came for Esther (the young woman Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her.”

Esther was very obedient and humble in many ways but the above verses portray her obedience. When Mordecai instructs her not to reveal her background she does so. Additionally, when her turn came to appear before the king she followed all the instructions given by Hegai, the king’s eunuch.

4. Courageous: Esther 4: 16

Esther 4: 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

Esther showed great courage when she agreed to approach King Xerxes on behalf of her people, the Jews, regardless of knowing she could be killed. She risked her life to intervene for her people and stand up against the wicked plot of Haman.

5. Intelligent and Wise: Esther 5: 3-4

Esther 5: 3-4

3 Then the king asked, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given you.”

4 “If it pleases the king,” replied Esther, “let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him.”

Esther was intelligent and wise. Even though she knew it was illegal to appear before the King without permission she carefully planned her approach to the King. When she appears to the King, he is pleased with her and offers her even half of his Kingdom but Easter never lost sight of what she wanted, to save her people. She only requested to have a banquet with the King and Haman. Her wisdom is also portrayed when she doesn’t tell the King about Haman’s plot until the opportune time.

6. Strong in Faith: Esther 5: 4-5

Esther 5: 4-5

4 “If it pleases the king,” replied Esther, “let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him.”

5 “Bring Haman at once,” the king said, “so that we may do what Esther asks.”

The book of Esther is the only book where God is not mentioned, but it extensively brings out great things that can only be achieved through faith in God. Faith at work is seen all through.  Esther’s actions reflect her trust in divine providence and her belief that God would guide and protect her in her mission. One of those instances is in Esther 5: 4-5, where Esther prepared a banquet even before appearing before the King. She had faith that all plans would work in the Lord.

7. Patient: Esther 5:7-8

Esther 5:7-8 “7 Esther replied, “My petition and my request is this: 8 If the king regards me with favor and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king’s question.”

After the first banquet with the King and Haman, she wasn’t quick to reveal all of Haman’s evil plans. Esther displayed patience by waiting for the right moment and asking for a second banquet on the next day.

8. Strategic Thinker: Esther 7: 4

Esther 7: 4” For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king.”

After inviting the king and Haman to the second banquet, Esther uses strategic thinking to expose Haman’s evil intentions. She tells the king that if her people were only to be sold as slaves she would have kept quiet, but the matter was only brought to his attention because her people were to be destroyed, killed, and annihilated.

9. Strong-Willed

In Esther’s eyes, there is nothing too big. She was willing to do anything to save her people. Even when the odds seemed against she was ready to try.

10. Selflessness

Even when the King was ready to offer her half of his kingdom Esther was not willing to take it. She only risked her life for the sake of the Jews.  This demonstrates her selflessness and deep care for her people.

11. Leader

Esther was willing to lead her people in the most challenging times. Her leadership skills enabled her to become the highest-ranked woman in Persia and Media

12. Loyal

Esther never forgot her origin or her people. She could have easily believed in her position to save herself but she opted to remain loyal to the Jews, standing with them even to the point of risking her life.
